On Saturday, March 25th the world will celebrate Earth Hour. This is a time where people are encouraged to shut off their non-essential electronics and electricity for an hour at 8:30pm local time to help raise awareness for climate change and help reduce the carbon footprint. Naturally, working in the renewable energy field, this is a project the PowerHub team can get behind. We had a chat with some of our Customer Success Team to see how they partake in Earth Hour every year.
How do you participate in Earth Hour every year?
“In the house we light candles, tell stories or play board games. It’s a way of letting our children, who have grown up and spent all their lives in the USA or Canada, know what it is like to live somewhere where electricity is at best intermittent and unreliable. When the weather has been nice we’ve also gone outside to expereince the silence of the neighborhood and tried start-gazing” – Senen
“My boyfriend and I go over to my parents house and make sure to turn off all the lights and unplug all electronics. During the warmer days we stay out in the backyard, go for a walk, bike ride or rollerblade to the park nearby. When it’s been colder outside, my mom bakes a pie, we make some mulled wine, light candles and just chat. It’s fun to share all of the fun stories, catchup with each other and listen to my parents talk about their younger years and life back home.” – Valeriya
Why do you think Earth Hour is important?
“It’s a great initiative to make people aware of the extreme power consumption. Obviously, an hour a year won’t save the planet but it’s still fascinating to see how much power demand plummets during this short period of time.” – Soma
“I think it’s important for two reasons: One, there is a recordable difference in the energy usage around the world every year that showcases how reliant we are on power, and Two, it gives us the time to reconnect with family and friends face-to-face. I know man people often use it for solitary time as well, such as catching up on a book. These moments are important to take and should happen more often than one hour in an entire year.” – Jenny
Any advice for those doing it for the first time?
“Do it your way, but please just stop and think how lucky you are to have the opportunity to decide to turn the lights down for such a short time.” – Stu
“Have fun with it! Try something outside of the box and make sure to get a bunch of people involved. We’ve tried to create a bit of tradition around it and throw a dinner party every year with a few friends and family. It always ends up being a laugh.” – Kate
Around the office the whole PowerHub team is unplugging their computers, turning off any unessential electronics and ensuring the lights are shut off for the weekend. We hope you enjoyed hearing from our Customer Success Team and make sure to reach out to them with any issues you encounter with PowerHub.
